Introduction
Nursing is one of the most demanding and rewarding professions in the medical field. It’s a highly respected profession because nurses have a huge role to play when it comes to healthcare delivery. As a nurse, you will be working in a multitude of institutions including hospitals, companies, community centres, and other health care facilities. You will be able to work with people of all ages and walks of life. You have the opportunity to acquire skills in different medical disciplines such as geriatrics, pediatrics, oncology, gynecology, neurology and more.
Nursing qualifications
To become a nurse you must study and complete a nursing diploma or nursing degree. Both can be completed in-part online, but most (if not all) curriculums require some on-campus practical learning. This is called ‘Blended Learning’. Unfortunately, this still means that you are required to visit the campus from time-to-time so close proximity to where you live, is still an important factor when choosing your education provider.
However, it is possible for registered nurses with experience under their belt, to study a postgraduate qualification completely online.
We take a deeper look at each qualification below.
Diploma of Nursing
Diploma of Nursing is your entry-level course for nursing, which will give you the title of Enrolled Nurse (RN). Since you don’t have a background in nursing, the course must be delivered on-campus, or in a blended learning format. This means you will have hours of online study combined with the required campus classes most weeks.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Similar to the Nursing Diploma, a Bachelor of Nursing requires a significant amount of practical learning. If you are new to nursing, this will mean a large portion of your studies will require you to attend the university, as well as take part in clinical placements.
If you have completed your Diploma of Nursing and have an already established career, you may be able to reduce the amount of time required on campus.
Master’s Degree in Nursing
When you are ready to take your nursing career to a higher level, you can continue your studies with a master’s degree in nursing. Unlike Diploma and Bachelor’s, Post-graduate or Master courses in nursing can be done 100% online. You have the option of taking the course full-time or part-time depending on your schedule. When you complete your Master’s Degree, you can become a nurse educator, nurse manager, or nurse anesthetist.
Some institutions also offer specialty courses in advanced nursing practice, where you can develop your nursing skills by taking Graduate Diploma courses in Clinical Nursing, Perioperative Nursing, Mental Health and more. When you take specialty nursing courses, you open wider career opportunities and higher salary grade options.
What makes online nursing course different?
Online courses are stand out against other types of study modes in more ways than one. An online nursing course is purely remote learning. The course content and delivery is designed to be twice as engaging and informative compared to face-to-face or on-campus learning.
With blended learning, you have online resources in classes. However, you are required to attend several hours of face-to-face study. Scheduling face-to-face classes will be challenging. There will be times when you will miss a scheduled class, or you will have to take off time from work just to attend class.
Face-to-face nursing courses limit your learning and exposure. It follows a strict course outline that does not give you the flexibility to learn beyond the curriculum. You also need to let go of everything. This means resigning from work and leaving your family behind.
Taking online nursing courses mean all your theory based units will be completed remotely or online. However, you have to perform a set of clinical placements, which eat set lasting for 2-5 weeks. The difference with face-to-face nursing courses is that your placements will be arranged at a health care facility near your home. There is no need to travel hours for your practical experience.
