Overview

The nationally accredited Diploma of Nursing helps you make a difference as an enrolled nurse in a skills shortage area. Train in anatomy and physiology, infection control and medication administration and be ready to work in a range of health care settings including acute, aged care, rehabilitation and mental health.

Through a mix of theory and practical coursework, learn to:

  • Care for a person with complex needs
  • Effectively communicate with patients and colleagues
  • Implement, monitor and evaluate nursing care plans
  • Tend and manage wounds in the clinical environment
  • Work within legal and ethical parameters

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section.

There are 4 steps to be considered for entry to this course:

  1. You must demonstrate that you meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s (NMBA) English Language Skills (ELS) registration standard by providing evidence and declaring that English is your primary language or providing a valid ELS test result. Note: You must meet the NMBA English language requirements before you enrol with TAFE NSW.
  2. You must demonstrate that you meet the academic entry requirements by providing evidence that you have completed HSC/Year 12 (or equivalent), or a Certificate III qualification (or above).
  3. You must complete a RU Ready / Basic and Key Skills Builder (BKSB) assessment. This will be arranged through your TAFE NSW campus; details will be provided throughout the application process. You must achieve an English language and math result of Exit Level 3 or above.
Course Success Requirements

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements to complete your coursework.

For the Diploma of Nursing, you must be at least 18 years old for your first work placement. You also need to provide evidence of your:

  • Working with Children Check (WWCC)
  • Australian National Police Record Check (NPC)
  • NDIS Worker Check (NDISWC)
  • Vaccination and health screenings
  • Anything else your work placement provider needs

You are required to meet the 10 Enrolled Nurse Standards for Practice which provide the core practice standards required by NMBA which must be observed and achieved during work placement.

The successful achievement of this qualification requires you to complete all core and 5 elective units from the list below. You will also be required to successfully complete a minimum of 400 hours of vocational placement in an approved setting.

  • Administer and monitor medicines and intravenous therapy
  • Apply legal and ethical parameters to nursing practice
  • Implement and monitor care for a person with mental health conditions
  • Implement and monitor care for a person with acute health conditions
  • Implement and monitor care for a person with chronic health conditions
  • Implement and monitor care of the older person
  • Apply nursing practice in the primary health care setting
  • Provide end of life care and a palliative approach in nursing practice
  • Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures
  • Follow safe work practices for direct client care
Electives
  • Workplace clinical practice
  • Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately
  • Contribute to the nursing care of a person with diabetes
  • Research and apply evidence to practice
  • Provide First Aid
  • Manage personal stressors in the work environment


This course requires you to successfully complete a minimum of 400 hours of work placement, which meets the minimum number of hours required by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC. TAFE NSW will arrange your work placement.

This is a full time, combination course. You must attend approximately 20 hours of class. You may also be required to complete approximately 20 hours of additional study. This additional study could include private study, work placements and research.

The course will run 3-5 days a week for 18 months.
