What is Nursing CPD?
Continuing Professional development (CPD) is one of the registration standards set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) that ensures nurses and midwives maintain current skills, knowledge, and competencies as healthcare professionals.
Nursing CPD requires all practicing nurses and midwives to commit a minimum number of hours each year towards professional development (CPD hours) that is relevant to the nurse or midwife’s context of practice.
A key role of the NMBA is to protect the public by establishing and maintaining safe healthcare practices. And although your healthcare knowledge may be up-to-date when you first register as a nurse, that knowledge needs to be continuously maintained to stay current. As such, the CPD framework helps nurses and midwives keep on top of the forever evolving healthcare landscape, while providing opportunities for them to grow both personally and professionally.
